Passion can be a positive, transformational resource. It can empower you and others to stand up, call out injustice, and inspire action. Feeling passionate about something could indicate that your higher consciousness is leading the way.
History is filled with determined people whose passion changed the world. Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, Joan of Arc and even Mother Teresa used their convictions to gain attention and evoke change. Watching Greta Thunberg's passionate commitment inspires hope for our planet's future.
In my decades of teaching spiritually based transformation, I have observed the false notions people have about passion, inaccurately labeling it as anger. Why? Possibly because they were punished by people who told them passion is bad or self-indulgent. They may have watched others express passion and misjudged it as destructive. They saw leaders respond to conflicts with violence rather than passionate dialogue.
Anger, unlike passion, gives a fleeting sense of self-righteous power. Anger is a primitive survival reaction triggered by fear, rarely about what you think it is about. Invariably, anger produces negative results, a chain-reaction perpetuating more anger.
Anger toward others accurately reflects how you feel about yourself, exposing denied inner beliefs. When anger explodes, it exposes suppressed guilt about things you have done that you are trying to hide.
Although expressing anger momentarily boosts self-esteem, ultimately it gives you one more reason to be angry at yourself.
Passion, however, comes from your soul-based consciousness, often stemming from a higher purpose that is sensed intuitively.
One of my students experienced ongoing anger toward her boss, irritated at everything this woman did. She knew there must be something deeper to understand. Doing inner work together, she discovered that her anger was actually toward herself – she had been ignoring her intuition passionately trying to direct her to move on from this dead-end job. Fear had been stopping her from taking the big step her spirit knew she was ready for.
By locating and resolving her fear-based programming convincing her that she was undeserving, she gained the confidence to listen to and follow her inner guidance.
She submitted her resume to another organization and was immediately hired for a dream job that completely fulfilled her passion. Magically, the negative feelings toward her boss dissipated and she was able to leave her job with positive thoughts rather than running away.
By mindfully observing and embracing anger, seeing that it might be passion in disguise, you can discover both subconscious fears as well as higher consciousness wake-up calls. Embracing passion will change you, allowing it to become a loving tool that will help transform everything you touch.
