SPREADING THE COMPASSION VIRUS

Updated: Mar 15

With everything going on in the world, feeling compassion might not be on the top of your to-do list. If you’re able to muster some, it might be short lived between binge-watching, Zoom meetings and political mayhem.

Truth is, you’re literally heart-wired to feel compassion; caring about others and even the world is your default mode. Compassion fosters relationships by helping you understand people, enabling you to survive in families and groups.

It's who you are.

What’s True Compassion?

Although generally compassion is defined as feeling deep sympathy and sadness for what someone is going through, and wanting to alleviate their suffering in some way, I look at it in a more Higher Consciousness way:

Compassion is profoundly caring about others by knowing we are all connected, all the same and have all experienced similar things. It’s about all others and we are all others.

Experiencing compassion is life-transforming, an imperative step in personal growth. It’s knowing that life is not just about your personal fulfillment, happiness, or even spiritual enlightenment. Rather, it's participating in something far greater than yourself: The evolution of all.

Not Rescuing

True compassion is listening to what your Higher Consciousness prods you to do in the moment that will assist someone elses spiritual evolution. Usually, the need to step in and rescue others comes from trying to save yourself from unresolved pain.

Perceiving people as Higher Consciousness Beings who’ve chosen their life path (consciously or subconsciously) for the lessons they're here to learn and/or teach, it gets easier to know what to do (or not do).

Assisting others with compassion comes from a place of trusting them, offering support in whatever way seems appropriate and consciously motivated and purely loving.

We've all chosen this life journey to learn lessons in the perfect ways we are supposed to learn them. Compassionate caring means you cannot, nor should you, try to prevent anyone from these important experiences. Even if they seem stuck. Even if they seem lost. Even if they're in suffering.

Of course, watching someone drown as you ponder what your Higher Consciousness should do is probably not the best choice. Trust yourself; you'll know what to do and what not to do. And know that it's all about your intent.

What is Self-compassion?

Creating a world that values compassion starts with self-compassion -- simply because you exist as an awakening being. Doing so you'll naturally treat others with compassion and raise children with that important value.

Self-compassion is acceptance, caring, understanding and forgiveness toward yourself and all that you’ve done or not done. It’s knowing that some of those dicey choices you made were based on fear, believing you had no other option at the moment. But they ended up teaching you Big Lessons (hopefully).

Self-compassion is knowing that all the “failings” you experienced were part of your soul's evolution, awakening you to discover why you chose to be here, helping manifest your Life Purpose.

Expressing Compassion

True compassion means being present and authentic. It can't be faked.

It means holding someone’s hand temporarily while they’re learning, trusting they will do it by themselves when they’re ready. Compassion is knowing the right time to release their hand, even if they disagree, even if you’re afraid for them.

It’s knowing what they need rather than what they want.

Bringing compassion to others powerfully effects their wellbeing, perhaps forever. It can inspire them to pay it forward and be more compassionate toward others.

Giving compassion releases neurochemicals in your body that increase trust and give you that warm, gooey feeling. It even offers healing, scientifically proven to extend your life by 22%!

Compassion toward others can put things into perspective, connecting you with a Bigger Picture understanding of life.

Giving pure compassion will always boomerang back in some way. This increases how deserving you feel and the untold miracles that manifest.

Compassionate actions don’t need to be big. Often those tiny acts of love are just as important in ways you may never know.

Know you have something to give (you do!) and opportunities show up spontaneously.

The world needs your compassionate heart more than ever right now.

Make sure to spread it virally. A good virus, of course.
